Frequently Asked Questions

PNR stands for Passenger Name Record — a unique 10-digit number assigned to every Indian Railways booking. PNR Status tells you whether your seat/berth is Confirmed (CNF), on the Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) list, or on a Waitlist (WL). It also shows your coach and berth number once the chart is prepared.

You can check PNR status any time after booking. The most important time to check is 4–6 hours before departure, when the chart is prepared. Once the chart is ready, your final allotted coach and berth number are shown. Waitlisted passengers are confirmed or dropped based on cancellations at this stage.

  • E-ticket (online booking): Top-left corner of the IRCTC booking confirmation email/SMS, and the ERS (Electronic Reservation Slip) PDF.
  • Counter ticket (offline): Printed at the top of the physical ticket in large digits.
  • IRCTC app: Under "My Bookings" → select your trip.
